Kinesio Taping Treatments

A patents leg has been wrapped with kinesio tapeKinesio Taping is a revolutionary method for the treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and chronic pain syndromes. Kinesio Taping provides therapeutic support to muscles and helps to prevent over-contraction, while maintaining full range of motion. This powerful healing technique allows weekend warriors, recreational athletes, and professional athletes to continue to train and compete, even while they’re recovering from an injury. Kinesio tape is not your ordinary athletic tape. It is very thin and made with a porous cotton fabric which allows the skin to breathe. Kinesio tape has an elasticity that is comparable to that of the skin and muscles. The sticky side of the tape uses a water-repellant, medical-grade acrylic adhesive to further supports the muscles and connective tissues. Kinesio tape can stay put for three to four days even through sweating and showering, and there is even a waterproof tape specifically for use on the hands and feet. Kinesio tape differs from normal athletic tape when dealing with muscle injuries. With ordinary athletic tape one would tape a muscle or joint to restrict motion and prevent further injury. Let’s use a strained calf muscle as an example. With regular athletic tape you would wrap the entire lower leg; the calf, shin, tibia, fibula and all. This prevents further strain by immobilizing the injured muscle, but it also impedes circulation and slows down the body’s natural healing process. Kinesio taping uses the tape to open up the muscle and allow full movement. Kinesiology tape is applied on top of an injured or strained area to stabilize it, but a muscle or tendon is never completely wrapped with a ring of tape. As you move, the tape, skin and connective tissue over the muscle or tendon also move, pulling slightly away from the muscle and helping with the body’s natural healing process by creating space for lymphatic fluid to flow around and cleanse the inflamed tissue.
